Top Of The Crops

Getting dressed on a Saturday morning I turned to look at myself in the mirror and thought, “Am I too old for crop tops?!” Mostly seen on teenage girls paired with low-rise skinny jeans, I thought I looked more pre-teen than the sophisticated image I usually lean towards. Although I wasn’t showing too much of my midriff I still felt slightly uncomfortable and began to think how I could style my outfit around this top to create a more mature image. In 2016 however, we’re not just limited to tight, tiny crop tops; we have cropped jumpers, cropped jackets and cropped shirts. So how can we pull off these pieces without looking like we’re trying too hard to keep up with the younger generation?

Maxi Skirt

Pairing your crop top with a maxi skirt instantly creates an elegant vibe. Taylor Swift shows a slither of skin with her crop top and high-waisted maxi skirt.

Tailored Fit

For a look that you can take from the office to the bar, wear your crop top with a pair of tailored or fitted trousers like Emily Ratajkowski and simply throw on a cardigan or blazer while in work!

Pencil Skirt

Miranda Kerr demonstrates how a loose-fitted crop top teamed with a simple pencil skirt can become a Red Carpet worthy outfit when you add a pair of heels and simple jewellery.

Mom Jeans

Take a leaf out of super model Kendall Jenner’s style book by wearing a pair of Mom jeans (fashion code for high-waisted loose-fitting jeans!) and a sophisticated shoe like the loafer.

Sport Chic

Kate Hudson has gone for sporty-chic by teaming her crop top with sleek trackpants to create a laid-back and carefree look. Add a pair of trainers or court shoes to bring the look to life!

Bomber Jacket

If you aren’t comfortable showing off too much skin, wear a bomber jacket over your crop top for a more casual feel like Jamie Chung.

Long Coat

Wear the look all the way into the Autumn/Winter seasons by adding a long coat into the mix. High waisted trousers, crop top and a duster coat or trench coat is perfect for making the crop top sophisticated!

Other Crop Trends We Love!

Crop Sweater

Wear a crop sweater on its own or layer over other pieces if you really want to keep on-trend! Wear over a dress or shirt as shown in the images above to show off your favourite pieces!

Crop Jacket

Cara Delevingne shows us how to wear the crop jacket trend by teaming hers with a crop top and leather leggings, giving off a rock-chic vibe.

Crop Shirt

Vanessa Hudgens is a vision in white as she wears high-waisted tailored trousers with a chic cropped blouse to an event.

The key to nailing the crop trend while still keeping a sophisticated look is not showing off your bellybutton! Just the slightest bit of skin is enough to keep your look edgy yet mature. However, here at Please Don’t Tell we love when people wear whatever makes them feel confident and comfortable-whether you adhere to the ‘Style Code’ or not! How do you wear the cropped trend?
